WCMAC Incident

Regarding the 2023 Western Canadian Martial Arts Championships (WCMAC) hosted in the SFU venue in October of last year, there was a very unfortunate incident involving the injury of a competitor. There have been many misconceptions regarding this incident, WKU’s standing with governments and more, and we would like to at this time address the issue to our WKU Canada Community, our standing and involvement.
First off, we truly would like to mention that all members of the WKU administrative team are hoping for the recovery of the injured competitor and that our hearts go out to the friends and family involved. It is very sad that these types of injuries can and do occur and it is the responsibility of everyone from the organizers and hosts to the competitors and coaches to help mitigate the chances of such injuries
WKU's Stance Regarding the Incident
In the case of the WCMAC injury, there are many factors to consider that ultimately may result in injury such as the one experienced at the October event. WKU Canada believes that it is important to discuss these factors, espessially with the context of health and safty, however at this time, WKU Canada is not permitted to go into detials regarding the WCMAC event.
WKU is conducting internal investigations into the conduct of the WCMAC organizers and WKU Canada and all sanctioned events will be taking steps to further reduce chance of injury. With that said, thus far, our internal investigations have not found any negligence on the part of the hosts regarding safety measures. In fact, evidence shows that the WCMAC team went above and beyond to provide a safe event. WKU Canada unanimously supports the hosts of the WCMAC until such a time that it is determined that negligence was involved by the hosts which we feel is highly unlikely.
Once we are permitted to speak on details surrounding the events that took place and the status of the WCMAC, we will be updating our website!
WCMAC and WKU Canada - Legal operations
Regarding the legality of the operation of the WCMAC event and sport martial arts in British Columbia. Through 2023 up until April 8th of this year, WKU Canada and its sanctioned WKU events such as the WCMAC and BC Open and other events, were under no legal requirement to seek permits from any athletic boards within BC. Weather or not provincial athletic boards expressed approval for the events was not relevant as they had no jurisdiction to permit such amateur events as described in Section 83 of the criminal code and provincial legislation at that time. News articles covering the topic surrounding the WCMAC Incident touch upon the statement of claims made against the event, and describes the event not having saught out required permits, please be advised that all WKU sanctioned events ensure to be suffiently permited as required by Criminal Code and Provincial legislation.
